Fono MC
Moving-coil phono stage with a discrete FET input stage, switchable gain and selectable resistive and capacitive loading. It suits owners of low-output MC cartridges, particularly Rega's own MC range, who need a dedicated phono preamp.

The Fono MC amplifies the signal from a moving-coil cartridge to a level suitable for a standard 200 mV line-level input on a hi-fi amplifier. Its input stage is built around a Linear Systems LSK389 low-noise FET in an all-discrete configuration. The high input impedance of the FET means the circuit puts very little loading on the cartridge.
RIAA equalisation is handled by a MUSE operational amplifier, and polypropylene capacitors are used in the signal path and in the equalisation circuits. Loading is set with dip switches on the rear panel: resistance (70 Ω, 100 Ω, 150 Ω or 400 Ω) and capacitance (1000 pF or 4300 pF) are selectable, and a further switch chooses between two gain settings (63.5 dB or 69.5 dB). This lets it work with most low-output MC cartridges.
The unit sits in the same aluminium case as the TTPSU and Fono MM, and its circuit grew out of the work done on the Aria phono amplifier. It is powered by a 24 V AC supply and is intended to be used only with the Rega PS1.
