The MD-301mkII records to and plays back from MiniDisc in a 2U rack-mount chassis. Analog connections are balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA, and digital transfers use optical SPDIF in and out. A second optical input on the front panel makes it easy to connect portable players without reaching around to the back of the rack.
Recording runs in either a 74-minute stereo mode or a 148-minute mono mode, which allows almost two and a half hours of continuous recording on one disc. Playback offers program and shuffle modes plus a timer play function, and the track order can be changed through full TOC editing. Audio coding is ATRAC v2, rev 4.5.
A PS/2 keyboard port on the front panel accepts an ordinary PC keyboard for naming tracks, editing the TOC and controlling the unit. A headphone output with level control is provided, and the RC-32 wireless remote is supplied in the box.
