Description

The JRS-34 is a passive ribbon microphone modelled on classic RCA ribbon designs. It was the first microphone developed by Cloud Microphones, in collaboration with Stephen Sank, and it is built around a large ribbon element and the maker's patented Rounded Magnet technology. It is intended to give a warm, full-bodied tone on both voices and instruments.

The microphone has a figure-8 polar pattern with a -35 dB null at 90°. The ribbon measures 0.19" wide and 2.35" long and is 1.8 microns thick. Frequency response is stated as 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and the maximum SPL is 138 dB at 1 kHz. The capsule is shock-mounted, and each unit is assembled by hand in the USA using US-sourced components.

Being a passive design, it has no internal electronics and relies on the preamp it is plugged into for gain. The maker's product page mentions its Cloudlifter active circuitry among its ribbon technologies. The ribbon element carries a 2-year warranty, and other parts have a limited lifetime warranty with registration.
