Description

COBALT8 is a keyboard synthesiser with eight polyphonic voices and 64 virtual-analogue oscillators, arranged in two independent oscillator groups. Each group offers 40 oscillator algorithms, including hard sync, ring modulation, PWM, fractal and chaos types, waveform morphing and bit crushing. The filter section has 31 resonant types, covering morphable and static state-variable and ladder designs with drive.

Sound shaping comes from three envelopes (amp, mod, filter), three audio-rate LFOs with tempo sync and a modulation matrix with eight assignable slots plus four fixed routings. A 512-note real-time sequencer, a 64-step polyphonic step sequencer with four animation lanes and a programmable 32-step arpeggiator are built in, along with three stereo FX engines offering 26 effect algorithms. Memory holds 500 patches (300 factory), 100 sequences and 100 FX presets.

The synth has a FATAR 37-key keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, 29 encoders, 24 buttons and a joystick. It connects through MIDI DIN in/out, class-compliant USB MIDI, analogue clock sync, line and headphone outputs and pedal inputs. The free MODALapp editor runs standalone or as a VST3/AU plug-in, and two units can be poly-chained for 16 voices.
