M 150 Tube

The M 150 Tube is a small-diaphragm tube condenser microphone with a titanium capsule mounted in a 40 mm sphere, giving an omnidirectional pattern that narrows at high frequencies. It is a modern take on the Neumann M 50 and is aimed at orchestral recording and DECCA Tree setups.

  • 12 mm titanium capsule in a 40 mm sphere
  • Omni pattern that becomes directional at high frequencies
  • Transformerless tube output stage
  • Self-noise 15 dB-A, S/N 79 dB (A-weighted)
  • -10 dB pad and 40 Hz / 16 Hz low-cut switch
  • Supplied with N 149 A power supply, shock mount and case

Description

The M 150 Tube uses a 12 mm pressure-transducer capsule with a titanium diaphragm and titanium backplate spaced 10 microns apart. The capsule sits flush in a 40 mm sphere, which makes the omnidirectional pattern progressively more directional at higher frequencies. The headgrille copies the shape of the original M 50, and sensitivity rises gradually above 1 kHz.

The signal is amplified by a circuit built around a subminiature triode, with a transformerless output stage instead of the output transformer of the 1950s original. Self-noise is 15 dB-A, and cable runs of up to 300 m are possible without transmission loss. A -10 dB switch reduces output level for preamps with limited headroom. A second switch engages a 40 Hz low-cut filter; in the LIN position the filter moves to 16 Hz instead of switching off.

The microphone connects to the supplied N 149 A power supply through a DIN 8 connector, and the power supply has an XLR 3 output. It suits classical and film-score sessions, particularly DECCA Tree stereo and surround recording.
