The Gemini II is a cardioid condenser microphone built around two vacuum tubes: a 12AX7 / ECC83 in the input stage and a 12AU7 / ECC82 in the output stage. The second tube handles impedance matching that most tube microphones leave to a transformer, so the design is transformerless. It uses a hand-built true condenser capsule with a gold-sputtered Mylar diaphragm and a discrete Class A amplifier.
A switchable 150 Hz low-cut filter (6 dB/oct) and a switchable 10 dB pad extend its use to loud sources. The listed applications are vocals, drums, overheads, room, acoustic and electric guitar, orchestra and strings, piano, woodwinds and brass. Maximum SPL is 151 dB without the pad and 135 to 145 dB with it, at 0.5% THD at 1 kHz.
The microphone connects to a separate power supply box with a multi-pin cable, and the power supply provides the powering, so phantom power is not required. The power supply outputs mic-level signal only, so it feeds a microphone preamp or audio interface. The kit arrives in a flight case with a wooden presentation box, a custom shock mount, the power supply and an IEC power cable.
