Hand-built 2U rackmount FET limiting amplifier reproducing the Blackface 1176LN, with a Class A output stage and a custom output transformer. Suited to tracking and mixing vocals, drums, bass and guitars, or to adding colour with little or no compression.

The 1176LN Classic Limiting Amplifier is a hardware reproduction of the 1176 designed by Bill Putnam Sr. It is modelled on the 1176LN, blackface, D and E revisions. Compression is controlled by adjustable attack (20 to 800 microseconds) and release (50 milliseconds to 1.1 seconds). Four push-button ratios are provided: 4:1 and 8:1 for compression, 12:1 and 20:1 for limiting. Pressing all ratio buttons together gives the distinctive "All Buttons In" mode, with more distortion and a different response to transients.
The signal path includes a Class A line-level output amplifier and a custom-built output transformer designed by Putnam, including the extra windings that provide the feedback signal to the output stage. The unit can also be used with compression turned off, to add the tone of its amplifiers and transformers. Each unit is built and tested by hand at the UA Custom Shop in Santa Cruz, California, and carries a 1-year limited warranty.
Connections are XLR and a barrier terminal strip for audio, with a detachable IEC mains inlet and switchable 115V/230V operation. Two units can be linked for stereo operation using the optional 1176-SA accessory.
